Our Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC) experts are here to point you in the right direction. They’ll review your submission and provide an informed opinion on the correct NMFC Item Number and Description for your specific commodity. A few quick notes:
A link to a website describing the exact item and its use, or product literature, photos, and a clear, detailed explanation of what the item is and what it does.
- Opinions are based only on the details you provide and apply to that single item.
- Opinions are not legally binding and may change if the NMFC is updated.
- Each request covers one article at a time—so if you have more than one, simply submit separate, additional inquiries.
- You can make your request through the NMFTA Online Store at https://store.nmfta.org. To help us process it quickly, please include:
- A link to a website describing the exact item and its use, or product literature, photos, and a clear, detailed explanation of what the item is and what it does.
The details necessary to provide an opinion include:
- Manufacturer’s description of the article, include type, model number or invoice reference.
- Digital photos, diagrams, advertising literature, retail package labels, and a direct website link for the product in question.
- The function or purpose of the product; specify if it is a component of a larger unit or system.
- Type of shipping package (i.e., bag, box, crate, cylinder, drum, pail, pallet, or skid).
- Form of shipment: set-up or assembled, knocked down, disassembled, nested, or folded.
- Materials used to construct the product (i.e., type of metal, plastic, paper, cloth, ceramic, wood, or combinations thereof). Include all coatings, facings, backings, plating, and inserts.
- For hazardous materials, a safety data sheet (SDS) must be attached.
- For foodstuffs, include product label(s) and list dominant contents or ingredients.
- Provide any additional information, explanation, or documents that will help identify the products under consideration for transport purposes.
- If there is a dispute between two NMFC items, please list them.
