The Weighing and Research Council (W&R Council) is a specialized industry group operating under the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA)™ that provides a collaborative forum for less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers focused on weighing and research practices.
Its primary purpose is to encourage the exchange of ideas, information, and expertise related to carrier-operated weighing and research programs. Through this collaboration, the Council works to improve consistency, accuracy, and efficiency in processes that support freight classification, inspection, and overall operational integrity within the LTL sector.
Participation is limited to NMFTA member LTL carriers, ensuring that discussions and initiatives are driven by organizations directly engaged in these functions. Representatives from participating companies—typically those with expertise in weighing, inspection, and research—contribute to Council activities, including meetings, task forces, and the development of best practices.
The W&R Council is governed by elected officers and supported by NMFTA oversight, which provides administrative leadership and ensures alignment with broader industry objectives. The Council develops and shares guidelines, manuals, and other work products that are made available to participants to support continuous improvement in weighing and research operations.
Additionally, the Council facilitates engagement with equipment vendors, supports collaborative problem-solving, and provides networking opportunities among peers.
